Run Through the Jungle
LYRICS: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/creedenceclearwaterrevival/runthroughthejungle.html
This song depicts the struggles that troops in the Vietnam war faced. Everywhere around them, they had to go through harsh jungle climates the the Vietcong had practically mastered, since it was their homeland. The jungle held harsh climates and rain that could last extensive periods of time that U.S. troops weren't accommodated to. It also describes the feeling of combat and how the people perceive this as the wrong move as the war continues. By including "Satan cries 'Take aim'", the singer intends to represent American troops as a monstrous invading force working for the devil. This was very impactful in regards to how American troops returning from Vietnam were treated on the home front, yet in the war it was chaotic as well. The idea of war is perceived in this song as a gun fight to the death filled with mass bloodshed and destruction. The description provided alludes to the idea that this has become war for the sake of war, when the United States intended to fight to remove communism from Vietnam. No longer is this the case, however. The rough conditions of Vietnam were also described as a nightmare by the singer of this song, which is very powerful to representing the greater mass of troops who didn't want to fight either. They experienced the massive bloodshed going on around them and only fought to survive when they were sent out, knowing that they had to fight.

LYRICS: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/ironmaiden/theedgeofdarkness.html
This song created by Iron Maiden in 1995 embodies the true situation that was faced in Vietnam for those that went. The lyrics depict this war as a difficult struggle where the use of "The Jungle" and the "Heart of Darkness" represents the Vietcong threat in their attempts to turn Vietnam into a communist country. The objective has barely been touched as the singer describes his location in Saigon, which is deep in South Vietnam. The U.S. forces are being overwhelmed as "The walls move in a little closer" meaning the Vietcong advance but he is challenged into the fight by the jungle around him. This is realistic to the situation because Vietnam itself is covered in massive jungles constantly bombarded by heavy rainfall, where the Vietcong have full awareness of their surroundings and knowledge while Americans grow weaker in the unfamiliar territory of which they are currently put in. This song relates to vietnamization because the singer describes how he was brought into the war and it seemed perfectly okay and acceptable. He almost described it like they were trying to ease some of the significance of the war, however that was not the case at all. Bye the end of his description, he mentions how most soldiers probably felt, not wanting to ever go back into the war.
